Compatibility, lubricant and handling questions technicians ask about R-22
Is it still legal to buy R-22?
Yes, for servicing existing equipment. What ended on 1 January 2020 was US production and import of new R-22 under the Clean Air Act, not the use of it. Anything sold now comes from remaining and reclaimed stock, which is why supply gets tighter and pricing less predictable each year.
Do I need EPA certification to buy R-22?
Yes. Federal law restricts the sale of R-22 to technicians holding EPA Section 608 certification. It is a handling and sales restriction on the refrigerant, not a certification of the supplier.
What can I replace R-22 with?
It depends on whether you want to avoid an oil change. The mineral-oil-compatible blends — R-421A, R-422B, R-422D, R-427A, R-438A and R-453A — allow a conversion without flushing to POE. R-407C tracks R-22 more closely but requires POE. Our R-22 replacement guide works through the decision, and the retrofit sequence covers the field steps.
What lubricant do R-22 systems use?
Mineral oil, or alkylbenzene in some older equipment. That compatibility is precisely why many technicians keep an R-22 system running on remaining stock rather than converting it — and why the mineral-oil-tolerant replacement blends exist.
