A2L Refrigerants: What Changes for Service Technicians
Every refrigerant replacing R-410A in new equipment is classified A2L. So is the R-1234yf in new vehicles. If you service air conditioning, this is arriving on your van whether or not you sought it out.
What A2L means
ASHRAE safety classification has two parts: a letter for toxicity and a number for flammability. A is lower toxicity. The flammability scale runs 1 (no flame propagation), 2L (lower flammability), 2 (flammable), 3 (higher flammability).
2L is a deliberately narrow category: these refrigerants burn only within a limited concentration range, need a sustained ignition source, and propagate flame slowly. They are not propane, which is A3. But they are not R-410A either, which is A1 and will not burn at all.
Which ones
- R-32 — single component, roughly a third of R-410A’s GWP
- R-454B — the R-410A successor most US manufacturers selected
- R-1234yf — automotive, replacing R-134A
What changes in practice
Equipment must be listed for A2L. This is the big one. You cannot charge R-32 or R-454B into a system designed for R-410A. The system is not listed for it, may lack required leak detection, and the electrical components are not rated for a flammable atmosphere. This is a safety and liability line, not a recommendation.
Recovery equipment must be A2L-rated. Standard recovery machines are not. Using one on an A2L charge puts a flammable mixture through equipment with unrated electrical components.
Leak detection is often built in. Many A2L systems include sensors that trigger mitigation — usually running the indoor fan to disperse a leak. Understand the sequence before you condemn a board.
Charge limits apply. Standards limit charge size by room volume for A2L systems, which is why you see them in split systems more than large single-zone units.
Ignition sources. Brazing near an open A2L system means recovering and purging first. Standard practice, but the consequence of skipping it has changed.
What does not change
Evacuation, leak testing, superheat and subcooling, charge accuracy — the diagnostic work is the same. R-32 is arguably easier to charge than most blends because it is a single compound with no temperature glide.
A2L is not a reason to avoid this equipment. It is a reason to get the right tools and training before it shows up on a call.
