A single cylinder of R-1234yf, the HFO refrigerant that has replaced R-134A in new automotive air conditioning. Its global warming potential is under 1, which is why manufacturers moved to it, and it is A2L — mildly flammable — so service equipment must be rated for it and must not be shared with R-134A. Per-pound cost is substantially higher than R-134A, so charge accuracy matters more.

Is R-1234yf flammable?
Yes, mildly — it is classified A2L. Recovery, recycling and charging equipment must be rated for it, and it must not share equipment with R-134A. The handling requirements are the main reason a workshop has to invest before taking on yf work.
Can I use R-134A instead of R-1234yf?
No. The refrigerants are not interchangeable, the service fittings are deliberately different, and substituting R-134A into a yf system is a compliance and warranty problem as well as a technical one.
Why does R-1234yf cost so much more than R-134A?
It is a more complex molecule to manufacture and the supply chain is younger. Because per-pound cost is high and vehicle charges are measured in ounces, charge accuracy and good recovery practice have a much larger effect on job profitability than they do with R-134A.
What equipment do I need to service R-1234yf?
A2L-rated recovery, recycling and recharging equipment dedicated to yf — not shared with R-134A — along with the leak detection to match. Confirm your machine is rated for yf before buying refrigerant at volume. See our automotive transition guide.
