A single 25 lb cylinder of R-448A, sold as Solstice N40. It is the blend most commonly specified when supermarket and commercial refrigeration systems move off R-404A, and it carries temperature glide — so it must be charged as a liquid and the dew and bubble points read correctly. One cylinder covers a typical case or small rack charge.

What does R-448A replace?

R-404A and R-22 in commercial refrigeration — it has become the default choice when supermarket and food retail systems move to a lower-GWP refrigerant. It is sold as Solstice N40.

How should R-448A be charged?

As a liquid, always. N40 carries meaningful glide, which means the two saturation figures on your gauges are not interchangeable — take superheat off one end of the glide and subcooling off the other. Treating it as a single number is the most common cause of a mischarged N40 rack — see our guide on glide.

What lubricant does R-448A use?

POE oil. On a conversion from R-22 that means changing the lubricant, not just the charge.

R-448A or R-449A — how do I choose?

In practice the equipment manufacturer’s approvals decide it, then whatever the site has already standardised on, then availability. The two blends are close enough in application that the paperwork usually settles the question. Our R-448A and R-449A comparison covers the differences.

In a sea of scams this website is legit for your freon needs... I only paid about half for their R22 as I would have on those accredited wholesaler websites. I researched for weeks and then finally pulled the trigger. I’m glad I did as their R22 is the real deal and worked out great for my immediate need. Once my order was placed, I got an email with a link tracking my shipment. It only took 3 business days for my pig of R22 to arrive at my door. Will purchase from again.
