The 25 lb R-407C cylinder, and the size our quarter, half and full pallets are built from. It covers a full charge on larger air conditioning systems and medium temperature refrigeration. Because the blend carries significant temperature glide, charge it as a liquid and use the dew and bubble points appropriately when setting superheat and subcooling — reading it like a single-component refrigerant is the usual source of error.

Compatibility, lubricant and handling questions technicians ask about R-407C
Is R-407C a drop-in replacement for R-22?
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding about it. R-407C matches R-22’s properties more closely than any of the common alternatives, but it requires POE lubricant — so the system has to be converted off mineral oil first. That makes it a planned job rather than a quick swap. If you need to avoid the oil change, look at R-421A, R-422D, R-427A or R-438A instead.
How much glide does R-407C have, and why does it matter?
Enough to change how you read the system. The refrigerant boils and condenses across a temperature range rather than at a single point, so superheat must be calculated from the dew point and subcooling from the bubble point. Reading it from one saturation figure is the classic source of a mischarged R-407C system — see our guide on glide.
Can R-407C be charged as a vapour?
No. Because of the glide, drawing vapour changes the composition of what is left in the cylinder. Charge as a liquid, and if a system needs topping up after a leak it is usually better practice to recover and recharge than to add to an unknown composition.
How does R-407C compare with the mineral-oil drop-ins?
Closer performance to R-22, at the cost of the lubricant change. Shops choose it where capacity and efficiency after conversion matter enough to justify the extra work — typically larger residential and light commercial jobs. See R-407C as an R-22 retrofit.
