Is R-404A being phased out?
It is under HFC phasedown because of its high global warming potential, and new equipment is no longer designed around it. It remains legal to buy for servicing existing systems, but availability tightens and pricing moves as the phasedown progresses — which is why many contractors now buy ahead rather than relying on spot supply.
What should I replace R-404A with?
R-448A and R-449A are the usual lower-GWP routes for commercial refrigeration, R-452A for transport refrigeration, and R-407A where it suits the application. The choice is usually driven by what the equipment manufacturer has approved. Our R-404A replacement guide works through it.
What lubricant does R-404A use?
POE oil. If you are converting a system that previously ran on mineral oil, the lubricant has to be changed and the residual mineral oil brought down — POE and mineral oil are not miscible in the way the system needs.
Does R-404A have temperature glide?
A small amount. It is near-azeotropic, so charge it as a liquid and do not draw vapour from the cylinder, or the composition of what remains will shift. The glide is small enough not to complicate superheat readings the way a high-glide blend does.
