Virgin vs Reclaimed Refrigerant: What You Are Actually Buying
Refrigerant pricing varies more than it should for what looks like the same product. Some of that is supply. Some of it is that “R-22” on a label does not tell you where the contents came from.
Three terms that are not interchangeable
Virgin — newly manufactured, never used, meeting AHRI 700 purity specification. What you get in a factory-sealed cylinder from a producer.
Reclaimed — previously used refrigerant that has been processed back to AHRI 700 purity by an EPA-certified reclaimer and verified by analysis. Chemically it meets the same specification as virgin. It is legal to resell, and for phased-out refrigerants it is a significant part of the supply.
Recovered — pulled out of a system and put in a cylinder. Not processed, not tested, not to any purity standard. It may contain moisture, acid, oil, non-condensables or a mix of refrigerants from a system nobody labelled. Recovered refrigerant may not be resold — it can be returned to the same owner’s equipment, or sent to a certified reclaimer.
Why this matters for R-22
US production and import of R-22 ended in 2020. Everything sold now comes from remaining virgin stock or from reclaim. That makes it exactly the product where someone is most tempted to move recovered gas as though it were reclaimed.
The consequences land on you. Moisture forms acid. Non-condensables raise head pressure and destroy capacity. Mixed refrigerants cannot be diagnosed by any PT chart and behave like nothing on your gauges. A contaminated charge can take out a compressor, and the failure looks like bad luck rather than bad refrigerant.
How to tell what you are getting
- Factory seal intact. A cylinder that has been opened tells you nothing about its contents.
- Stated specification. AHRI 700 should be claimed explicitly, not implied.
- Cylinder condition. New disposable cylinders for virgin product; reclaimed usually ships in returnable cylinders with reclaimer markings.
- Price that makes sense. Refrigerant priced far under market is priced that way for a reason.
Is reclaimed worth buying?
Properly reclaimed refrigerant meets the same purity specification as virgin and is a legitimate, environmentally sound part of the supply chain — particularly for phased-out products where virgin stock is finite. The distinction that matters is not virgin versus reclaimed. It is certified reclaimed versus recovered gas sold as though it were reclaimed.
