Compatibility, lubricant and handling questions technicians ask about R-438A

How close is R-438A to R-22?

It is engineered to come closer to R-22’s overall behaviour across direct expansion systems than most alternatives, while still working with the existing mineral oil. That combination is the reason it gets specified on jobs where the customer would notice a drop in performance.

Is MO99 the same as R-438A?

Yes. Genetron MO99 is Honeywell’s trade name for R-438A.

Does R-438A require changing the oil or components?

It is formulated for use with the existing mineral oil, and the metering device usually does not need replacing. Fit a new filter drier as part of the conversion. Take baseline readings first so you can verify the result — see the retrofit sequence.

Does R-438A have glide?

Yes, as all the R-22 replacement blends do. Liquid charging only, and remember the evaporator temperature is not one number — read superheat against the correct end of the glide or the charge will look right when it is not. Compare it with the alternatives in our drop-in comparison.

In a sea of scams this website is legit for your freon needs... I only paid about half for their R22 as I would have on those accredited wholesaler websites. I researched for weeks and then finally pulled the trigger. I’m glad I did as their R22 is the real deal and worked out great for my immediate need. Once my order was placed, I got an email with a link tracking my shipment. It only took 3 business days for my pig of R22 to arrive at my door. Will purchase from again.
